‘withstand’ is a site-specific installation as a part of ‘You are the problem here’ group exhibition on view during May 2024 at Galleri Verkligheten in Umeå.
‘withstand’ is a big-scale installation resembling an abstract body, a skeleton which is deformed, wrapped tightly in the black rope, installed hanging in the exhibition space. A skeleton, inspired by a ribcage, previously symbolising strength and protection now destroyed and hanging in the air, reminding us of surrender and helplessness. This structure is just a remnant, the spirit that collapsed and it’s only a memory or perhaps a ghost left behind in space.
‘withstand’ is an experimental project, where the artist uses the body as a metaphor and in doing so, explores the notion of control and power. In this case the form of the installation doesn’t embody a concrete notion, instead, the material becomes prominent where the artwork’s attributes and features take the lead and fill up the space. Cracked and broken wooden structure, loosen steel bolt joints and flexible ropes, all selected with a sole purpose to build a shape shifting body, which under its own weight slowly descends. The act of creation is succeeded by unsteadiness and heaviness of the material, where the artwork slightly alters its form over a longer period of time. Seemingly trapped and powerless, but taking its own course of surrender, this structure is perceived as the survivor, an independent spirit of resilience.
